Kampala, Uganda – April 2026: Pride Bank Limited has become the first-Tier II financial institution in Uganda to attain the Sustainability Standards Certification (SSCI), a globally recognized framework developed by European Organization for Sustainable Development. The achievement signals a bold step forward in embedding sustainability at the core of the bank’s strategy, operations, and long-term value creation.

Through this certification, Pride Bank strengthens its ability to navigate economic shocks, drive responsible growth, and deliver measurable impact across society, the economy, and the environment. The certification also aligns the bank with global best practices and positions it competitively within an evolving financial ecosystem increasingly shaped by sustainability standards.

Speaking on the achievement, Edward Mutyaba, the bank’s Head of Risk Management noted that the certification marks a fundamental shift in how the institution operates.

“This certification is a recognition of compliance and represents profound institutional transformation. We have aligned our strategy, operations, and culture to sustainability principles that ensure we create long-term value for our customers, stakeholders, and the communities we serve. It strengthens our resilience and positions us to respond effectively to emerging risks while driving inclusive growth,” he said.

The journey to certification has seen Pride Bank adopt a comprehensive Value Creation Model, optimizing its technology, business processes, and human capital to deliver operational excellence and sustainable profitability. Central to this transformation is the bank’s commitment to three High Impact Goals aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with a strong focus on inclusive finance, particularly for women, youth, and refugee communities.

The certification was achieved with the support and collaboration of key development partners, including Uganda Development Bank, which has been instrumental in advancing sustainability standards within Uganda’s financial sector.

At the handover ceremony, Arshad Rab, CEO European Organisation for Sustainable Development commended Pride Bank for its leadership and commitment to transformation, saying “Pride Bank has demonstrated compliance with international standards and a forward-looking approach to value creation and resilience in emerging markets.”

Pride Bank’s milestone comes at a time when Uganda’s banking sector is undergoing a broader shift toward sustainable finance, driven by regulatory guidance from the Bank of Uganda and increasing global expectations. Beginning in 2025, financial institutions are required to adopt IFRS S1 and S2 standards, which mandate the disclosure of sustainability and climate-related risks. Alignment with international frameworks such as the EU Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) is also becoming critical for institutions seeking access to global capital and participation in international value chains.

With this certification, Pride Bank joins a growing group of forward-thinking institutions that are championing sustainability within Uganda’s financial ecosystem. However, as the first-Tier II bank to achieve SSCI certification, Pride Bank has set a new benchmark for its peer institutions.

As the bank looks ahead, the focus now shifts to deepening implementation; translating certification into tangible outcomes through inclusive financial products, strengthened community impact, and continued innovation. This milestone reinforces Pride Bank’s purpose of transforming lives and stresses its commitment to building a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable future for Uganda.
